How much money did TD give to Coastal Jazz?
Estimating the jazzfest title sponsorship's value as it heads toward a breakup.

The value of TD's jazzfest title sponsorship
Lately, I've been thinking a lot about the TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival.
While I caught up on the controversy that surrounds the festival, I saw The Globe and Mail report that TD would end its title sponsorship after 2022.
The news made me wonder: how much money did TD give to Coastal Jazz?
Here's my estimate...
(once again, this article is for entertainment purposes only, of course)
$1 million per year, I think.
First, I read Coastal's annual report from 2019:
It says that Coastal's 2019 budget was $3.96 million, and it shows this pie chart:

Check out the light pink piece of the pie, "Contributed revenue". That's donations plus corporate sponsorships.
Just eyeballing it, that piece looks like 40% of the pie to me.
40% of $3.96 million (assuming the budget is balanced!) is the total amount that individual people donated plus what corporate sponsors paid.
It's $1.584 million in total contributions.
Helpfully, the report lists all individual donors, grouped up into price tiers. I counted them up on a sheet:

If every donor gave the minimum at each tier, they'd have all donated $79,350 collectively.
If they all gave a dollar less than the next tier (which of course they wouldn't), in theory they could've all donated as much as $220,916.
To find out how much Coastal raked in from corporate sponsorships alone, we subtract these figures from the $1.584 million in total contributions.
That leaves a range of between $1,504,650 and $1,363,084 in corporate cash.
TL;DR, I think that Coastal got about $1.4 million in corporate sponsor money in 2019.
But if you go to their webpage about supporters (CTRL-F my name on that page!), you'll see some other companies listed below TD.
My simple thought is that all those other companies add up to maybe $300-400K.
And that TD is there with the remaining $1 million.
What happens with TD out?
Coastal must find an equal replacement, or it will shrink to a shadow of its former self. Obvious options: another big bank or a real estate firm, like Beedie or Concord Pacific.
Did TD cut their budget – is that why they're dropping out? I doubt it. Coastal's next million will be their hardest.
